Newly-appointed U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, Hollywood actress Emma Watson,
delivered an emotional and powerful speech at the United Nations headquarters
on Saturday to help launch the #HeForShe gender
equality campaign.
The campaign, which is the first of its kind at
the UN, is put together to galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be
advocates for change in gender equality issues.
Emma made some powerful points that I think must
be emphasized over and over again, especially in this part of the world. She
talked about Feminism not being synonymous with Man-Hating, and that "It
is time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing
ideals. We should stop defining each other by what we are not and start
defining ourselves by who we are.”
Feminism, for the
record, is defined as the belief that
men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of
the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.
She ended her speech
with a passionate plea for everyone to ask themselves: 'If not me, who? If not
now, when?
